In a new study published in “Pediatrics,” it was found that the number of obesity cases is increasing in elementary schools. The study also revealed that early childhood obesity episodes are now more common than they were just a decade ago. Obesity in the younger population is linked to poor mental health and is a precursor of chronic diseases in adulthood such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Dr Solveig Cunningham, PhD, the lead author of the study, stated that the data used in the study is nationally representative, so findings can be generalized to children growing up in the United States. He also added that for over a decade, his team has observed an increase in the number of children with obesity, despite extensive efforts from parents and policymakers to improve children’s nutrition, physical activity, and living standards.

The study showed that approximately 40% of children experience obesity and could be categorized as overweight before leaving primary school. The researchers asserted that despite public health programs and measures aimed at avoiding obesity, the incidence of obesity is rising, and it is especially prevalent in children born in the 2000s. When race and ethnicity were taken into consideration during the study, it was found that non-black Hispanic kindergarteners had a 29% higher rate of developing obesity by fifth grade. They also found that the risk of developing obesity has increased by 15% among children from economically disadvantaged groups.
